My twin, and changing up my running plan

Happy Monday everyone! I hope all the dads out there had a great Father’s Day! I had a fairly hectic weekend- but in a good way!

Friday my family went to my wittle cousin’s high school graduation! It was the shortest graduation I have ever been to, which was greatly appreciated. They had a few speeches and a song and then BAM! they were reading off the names for the kiddos to pick up their fake diplomas. YAY Patrick!!! You’ll still be the little boy who screamed whenever he had to put on sunscreen to me.

I asked my sister if my hair always looks that big. She said, “Like a lion? Yes.”

And apparently all the cool kids (boys) wear shorts under their gowns now. In my day, the boys HAD to wear slacks or they weren’t allowed to walk. But my high school was super uptight and also didn’t allow leis and decorated caps.

After dinner and catching up with the fam, my parents, sister and I didn’t get back until really late that night. So Saturday I hit snooze a bazillion times and slept in instead of waking up early to run. I started my run around 11AM. And man that hurt. It was hot. 6 miles total- 3 easy and 3 @ pace (8:51).

I have been following a running plan for my upcoming 10K, but I think I need to make some changes. Most running plans prescribe only 1-2 runs with speed work per week. In fact, many elite runners do the same (2 tough speed workouts/week) because your body really needs time to recover. [And since I’m the farthest you can get from “elite,” that means I should do less speedwork right? 😉 ]

Well, my running plan has 2-3 days of tough speedwork + an extra 1-2 days of easy runs with a little speedwork mixed in. This may work for some people, but I quickly discovered this isn’t working for me.

After a tough tempo run and 400m repeats during the week, my body was NOT ready for those 3 @ pace miles. At this point of my running “career,” I can easily run 6 miles and I know I can run 3 miles at an 8:51 pace. But my legs were so beat from earlier in the week, I found it hard to keep those 3 miles sub-9 min. And those last “easy” miles. Ugh. I was struggling to keep those under a 10:30 pace.

So for right now I am going to change my plan to only incorporate 2 days of hard speedwork. I may not progress as quickly, but I think this is the safest way to avoid injury!

After my run, Kyle and I had to do some errands and then we were off to his cousin’s graduation party. It was great to see all of Kyle’s family! At one point I whispered to Kyle that some of his cousin’s friends looked like they were 13 years old. He laughed and told me that’s what high schoolers look like. That made me feel old!

Anyways, Sunday I didn’t get a run in cause it was Father’s Day!

My sis and I made my dad breakfast and then we did some stuff around the house while my dad watched golf. Before we knew it, it was time to take my grandpa (on my mom’s side) out to lunch. Lunch took forever (>2 hours!) so by the time we got home, we had just enough time to let my dad open presents and then it was time to drive to my other grandpa’s house. We spent the afternoon/evening chatting and then took my grandpa out to dinner.

Was your high school super strict about graduation?

How often do you do speedwork?

Did you do anything for Father’s Day?

  1. Oh man, one of my classmates stripped off her gown on stage to reveal a bikini! And we had beach balls batted around all day and stuff, not strict at all. I had a cute little cocktail dress though, neon pink just for fun 🙂 I do 1 interval session and 1 tempo run each week and keep the rest VERY easy!

  2. I try to do one interval workout and one tempo run per week if I’m in the middle of training…but if I get them both in, it’s a good week. I wouldn’t be able to do any more speed days than 2.

I’m not sure if my high school was strict about graduation..I was a goody two shoes who wore whatever they told us to. For my college graduation though, I was in the very last row (20 close friends and I thought that was a good idea???), and it took FOREVER to go through the names, so my family and I texted pictures back and forth while we waited

    1. I need to listen to the pro here *points to you* and stick to 2 speed days 😉

Lol I was a goody two shoes too!! HAHA I was stupid and didn’t have anywhere to put my phone during college graduation so I gave it to my parents. My aunts and uncles like to tell me that that was the longest graduation ever and those were hours they will never get back 😉 (all joking of course)

  3. My high school wasn’t too strict but my friends and I were all such rule-followers no one did anything crazy. Also, who cares if your hair is big? It looks awesome and there’s a saying in the south “the higher the hair, the closer to God” haha! And you’re going to love your 10k!

  4. I graduated from a Catholic high school so they were strict about everything including the kinds of shoes we wore! I guess I don’t blame the guys, those gowns can get hot! I am terrible about doing speed play. I think I need a running coach to help me get on track for my next half! I just get stuck in running miles and not adding any special training to improve. Yikes!

  5. I LOVE that pic of you and your dad! You were so stylish even then. 🙂 And happy graduation to your cousin. I’m jealous of your hair. (My hair is so flat and lame.)

I do speed work once per week because I hit it really hard when I do. Any more than that and my body would probably fall apart.

  6. American schools confuse me! I haven’t graduated (yet, hopefully one day!) but I did go to college, I think our college is different to your college though. By the way – I love your hair!

And hopefully next year, I have a blog post similar to this with 10k training – I have 8 weeks till my first and my training plan is non-existent!! (Well in my head, I have a long run, and two short(er) ones. But speedwork?! what is this?! 😉 )

    1. Oh weird! Yes learning about school systems in other countries has always confused me! Aww thank you 🙂

Oh you can totally do it in 8 weeks! I think if you write out a plan, you’ll rock it 🙂 Speedwork is what masochists/runners do further torture themselves. Also see “punishment” or “suffering” 😉

  7. You have Texas sized hair. You’ll fit right in when you visit. Love the Spongebob sign!
Yeah, you need to be careful with the speedwork – it makes you faster but increases injury chances. I’ve been doing track workouts once a week, but I also push my shorter runs. I ‘m supposed to take it easy on long runs, but havent’ been sticking to that so much. I think we need coaches.
