Don’t compare yourself to others- my timed mile

You guys rock! Thank you all so much for congratulating Kyle and me on our new home 🙂 We are so excited to start this new chapter of our lives and we appreciate your kind words!

Time for a weekend update!

On Saturday, Kyle asked if I wanted to work out at a park near our old high school. Of course I said YES! Plus, this would give me a chance to go to our old high school track and I could do a timed mile. Because apparently I wanted to relive high school PE?

I started with a warm-up lap and I quickly remembered how much I hate the track. I’m fairly certain that 400m on a track is wayyyy longer than 400m on a running trail. Same with a mile, and any other distance for that matter. And man my legs were not ready for this run. I think they were still beat from Thursday’s 400’s 0.3 mile repeats.

After warming up, I took off like a speeding bullet 16 year old dog with a hip replacement. I knew it was going to be a tough one when I started to feel winded during the first lap (6:30 mile pace). I started to slow down because I know I can’t maintain that pace. My next lap was still sub-7, but just barely and I wanted to quit already. Lap 3 was definitely over a 7 min pace, and I swear I felt like I had been smoking a pack a day for my whole life. During my final lap, I just kept repeating that this was my last lap and then I’m done and can go pass out in the corner.

7:16 mile. Not bad. For some reason I wasn’t super happy with my time, even though I should be because the last time I did a timed mile it was 7:46.

I think a part of me was disappointed because it felt harder than I thought it should (but that’s stupid because it’s supposed to feel hard). And the other part of me was disappointed because so many of my blog friends are super speedy and this is their average pace on most runs.

And then I remembered (much later) that I need to stop comparing myself to other runners. Celebrate your friends’ successes, but don’t use it to diminish your accomplishments. The only person I should compare myself to is past Amy, and I’m much faster than her 🙂

After ridding that feeling of suffocation and death, Kyle and I did some pistol squats. They hurt so good. I decided that I will try to incorporate them into my workouts because they are awesome and burn and hurt. But seriously, I was able to pin point my week spots in my lower body when I was doing them.

After some arms and abs, Kyle and I went to buy/pick up a couch that I had found on Craigslist. I know, super sketch, but this lady turned out to be really sweet and only offer me candy to get into the back of her van twice. I kid. She really was very kind.

The couch is in great condition but it has this bad musty smell. We were planning on steam cleaning it anyways, but now this is an absolute must. If you have any tips, please please share!

Oh and then back at Kyle’s house, he gave me our house warming present (which he spent way too much on!) and he was simultaneously named, “Best Boyfriend Ever.”

Seriously cannot wait to use this bad boy. Would it be weird to whip this out just to scramble my eggs?

The rest of my weekend was pretty uneventful except for a leaky pipe at my parents’ house (we don’t move to our new house for about a month). Our neighbors discovered that our pipe that runs from the water main to our house was leaking. Fan-freaking-tastic.

My parents were out of town at a wedding, so they asked Kyle to help me shut off the water (apparently it is hard to turn off). Of course Kyle, living up to his Best Boyfriend Ever title, decided to investigate and temporarily fix the problem until we could call a professional. 5 hours later he had stopped the leaking enough so that the water could be turned on for the evening. (We shut it off again this AM, until someone takes a look at it)

And that’s about it! Ran an incredibly slow 2.5 miles this AM before work. Legs were so sore and tired that this was all I could manage. Can’t believe my 10K is on Friday! Crap, I need to find a red headband/bandana to wear!

Do you find that you compare yourself to your super speedy runner friends? STOP! 🙂

Ever do a timed mile?

Have any couch cleaning tips?

Ever buy anything off of Craigslist?

  1. I usually compare myself to others which is so not smart. I’m definitely working on it now. I haven’t bought anything off Craig’s list but a know a lot of people that have and were happy with their products.

  2. sent Kyle a groupon link for carpet/upholstery cleaning. (worth a look). eager to eat whatever you make using that amazing mixer!

  3. That mixer is seriously awesome. YOU ROCK, KYLE! I don’t have any suggestions for the couch, but I’m glad the lady you got it from was sweet and didn’t seem to be a serial killer or anything. Um hey…that mile is FAST!! You killed it! I love it. 🙂 And you are just going to get faster too. I haven’t run a timed mile (like a mile that I was actually trying to go the fastest that I am capable of…I have run plenty of one miles that were timed as like a warm up or whatever) since high school. BUT I get my chance again in a couple of weeks at this track meet that my run club is having. So we’ll see! I’ve only run on a track once since high school and that was at the end of my marathon!

    1. Kyle does ROCK! 🙂 Not meeting a serial killer is always a good day in my book. Awww thank you so much love! You’re going to seriously kill it at that track meet! I can’t wait to hear about it!!!

  4. That is one awesome timed mile! I am incredibly impressed. Kyle is most definitely the best. Isn’t that what every girl dreams of?! I love it. By the way, I spent an entire race picturing how I was going to decorate our house to ignore the pain I was feeling. It worked out well and I didn’t have to hear about Rock’s ideas while I did it 😉

  5. I have one running friend who is super hardcore and trying to qualify for Boston next year. I am not even close to being as fast as her, nor do I particularly want to be, but I still find myself comparing. But at the end of the day, you need to do what’s best for you–it doesn’t matter how you do compared to others, as long as you’re doing the right thing for yourself!

Congrats on your speedy mile! I’ve never done a timed mile, but I somehow ran a 7:03 or something insane at my last 5K. No idea how that happened, but I was pretty pumped to see that!

    1. EXACTLY! Couldn’t have said it better myself 🙂 My sis always says, “You do you, and I do me.” Works perfectly with this I think?

Aww thank you!! Holy crap that’s AMAZING!!! I’d be going crazy lol!!!

  6. I think anything sub 8 min/mile is awesome. I am not sure I could get below that at this time in my running struggle. I am terrible about comparing myself to others and have to constantly remind myself that I am at a different place and pace and that’s okay. And pistol squats are the real deal, my friend! I can’t even do one haha

    1. Aww thank you love! Haha I think we are all guilty of the comparison trap! Completely agree that we are all at different places and that’s completely OKAY! LOL I could barely walk the next day. The the day after I was walking like I had something shoved up my bum 😉

  7. I love this and you are so right. Sometimes we can be too hard on ourself and begin the comparison game. Good job in your accomplishes girl!! You should be so proud of where you came from.

PS I love Craigslist!!! I found some awesome real wood furniture pieces and refinished them!! 😊

    1. Awww thank you so much love! I think we are typically our worst critics and you are completely right- be proud of where we come from!!

YESS that’s my goal is to find some cheap finds on CL and refinish them 🙂

  8. 7:16!! For the record, there is no way a 16 year old dog with a hip replacement could run that mile! It’s SO HARD not to compare yourself to others’ running times (guilty). I have to remember that everyone started slow, everyone gets injured, and everyone wants to be faster…even the fastest runners that I know.
Go Kyle! I don’t even like mixers or baking, but that’s such a sweet boyfriend thought!

    1. LOL thanks so much love! You are soooo right! We all start somewhere and progress at different rates and hit speed bumps along the way (hopefully not literally). Hehe so excited to use my mixer!

  9. Congrats again on your casa and a great timed mile! Yes it would be weird to make eggs in that thing. I only compare myself to people slower than me. I haven’t done a timed mile since high school, but would love to see how I am now. Couch cleaning tips??? Um, don’t use a blacklight in the process.

  10. So why does that kind of thing always happen at the most inconvenient time, aka your mom isn’t there to make everything better?

Girrlllll that pace IS hard (for me at lest) and stinkin awesome! I so admire the fact that you even DID track work. I literally can’t remember the last time I did that.
Ok, I can remember but it’s embarrassing because it was in college….and not even senior year.

    Yikes!

Oh and I’m super duper jeal of your kitchen aid! For a baking perfectionist, it’s a dream come true 🙂

    1. Lol RIGHT?? Freak plumbing issues only occur when your mama is gone!

Awwww thanks so much love!!! Lol I know you’d rock a track workout!

Hehe you’re welcome to come use it any time. We just better not bake at the exact same time or they’ll be a lot of hand slapping 😉

  11. Girl you rocked that mile- nothing to beat yourself up for! I’ve actually never done a timed mile in my life. Sweet mixer, congrats on the house, and yep I’ve had luck w stuff from Craigslist for sure. Just make sure to examine it and ask questions!

  12. I think you are really fast! That is an awesome mile! I know what you mean, though. I am always reminding myself not to compare myself to other people in my running group. It is really hard, though! Guess we will just have to remind each other!

  13. It’s hard NOT to compare yourself to others I think! It’s just human nature (girl nature too maybe!!) You just have to keep talking your way out of it! Anything under an 8 minute mile I think is outstanding! Keep it up!! I’ve never steam cleaned a couch but I know you can rent them… Although maybe you can find a cheap groupon for a cleaning service?! Also, that KitchenAid Mixer is AMAZING! My fiancé bought one for me a couple years ago and I used it about once a week! Sadly we’ve left it behind (gifted to a very good friend) on our journey to Australia this year. I miss it every day! Haha, weird but true!

    1. OMG isn’t it so hard?! I really do think you’re right- us girls tend to do it a lot. Awww thanks so much!!!

YES I believe you can rent those steamers! Brilliant idea to check groupon! Might be worth it!

Awww noooo haha! I guess Australia is worth it though 🙂

  14. I pretty much always get lots of my furniture from Craigslist; I’m a big fan! I’ve moved so much in the past eight years that I know I won’t need investment items that I’ll have for the rest of my life, and you can find some really great stuff on there.

  15. I cant imaging comparing myself to others and I am a completely different person than from when I was in high school. I think you are absolutely right. I also have to admit I wanted to die running a mile in school and I would love to ask people what they think about me running half marathons now. haha they would probably laugh at me.

  16. I often ask people who say they do not like running why? They instantly compare themselves to others…they will never like it if they compare

  17. I try not to compare myself to others, just myself. I get quite competitive with myself though. I don’t mind that ‘Bobby’ can beat me, so long as I beat me! And I know that sounds weird, but I agree with the whole, ‘don’t compare yourselves to others’ 🙂 But I am a little jealous of your fast mile. 😉
I have no idea about cleaning a couch. Anti-bacterial something or other and steaming. 🙂
And I’ve never used Craigslist, I don’t know if its over in England, I’ve just heard all sorts. I thought it was a dating site at first…. lol!

  18. Awesome job on your timed mile! A 30 second improvement is huge! As far as comparing myself to others, I’ve been on both sides of it…where I’m either disappointed in new PR because I know it’s still a lot slower than someone else or am afraid that being TOO excited about a good race will come off as being “braggy” to a friend who runs a little slower than me. Am I the only one who over thinks things like this? Haha Ultimately the only person I am competing with is myself and I’m happy about how much further and faster present me can run compared to me just a few years ago. 🙂

  19. Ahhhh, I’ve been guilty of comparing myself to my speedy blogger friends too. You’re so right though! Kyle is a sweetheart! I have the same one, and it’s a life savior. For Christmas, Justin and I got and extra addition to it, so we can make ice-cream too. I haven’t tried it out yet, but with this humidity, I am certain I’ll use it this week. ❤ xoxo

  20. What a HUGE improvement from your last timed mile!
I do the timed mile maybe once every year or two… I feel like there are a lot of conditions that could really sway the results (such as wind/heat).
Congrats on your new house! I’m so excited for you guys!

  21. Awesome job on your mile time! A 7:16 is really great!! I honestly don’t think I’ve run a timed mile since junior high and back then I ran something like an 11:00 pace :). It’s good to know we have lots of time to keep improving.

  22. Congratulations!!! I’m so excited for you and Kyle! Moving in with each other is such a big step! Can’t wait to hear all about the new house. I have a terrible habit of comparing myself to others even though I know it’s bad. I think we all do it!

I nominated you for a “Very Inspiring Blogger Award”! Thanks for being so awesome! http://wp.me/p4hcdz-19h

  23. I love this post! I too compare myself to other runners. I get pretty hard on myself when I don’t run a mile as fast as I want to. It is good to hear so many other runners do the same thing. It’s always good to be reminded that we shouldn’t compare ourselves and instead celebrate the hard work we put in. Sounds like a great weekend! I am happy you craigslist couch lady didn’t turn up to be a serial killer =)

    1. Aww thank you so much! Haha yep, I think most of us fall into the comparison trap! Totally agree- focus on how far you have come! LOL thank you- I too am quite glad that the couch lady wasn’t a murderer 😉

  24. Congrats on that speedy mile! Way speedier than me and so impressive! I try not to compare myself too much but I’m okay with my turtle pace 🙂 And Kyle definitely wins best boyfriend, I’m so jealous of your mixer!
