Taper Time

Wow. So weird to say that I am now officially tapering for my first marathon!

I’m actually not going through cranky running withdrawals like a lot of people do. I’ve been so busy with school that I have had very little spare time, and not having to go out on 1-3 hour long runs is actually nice!

run pumpkin patch
Ran past the pumpkin patch that Kyle and I used to go to. This year we are poor and will not be spending $30 on a single pumpkin like crazy people.

I’ve actually switch to treadmill running for some of those shorter runs for 2 reasons:

  1. I have been studying a lot and I want to be able to watch some TV haha. #embarrassing
  2. To slow myself down. I physically cannot run fast on a treadmill. It’s just impossible. When I ran outdoors (on some of these taper runs that I’m supposed to take easy) I found myself speeding up when I ran around other runners because I didn’t want them to think I was super slow. How stupid is that?

But man, it seems like it was only a few weeks ago that I decided to start training for the Morgan Hill Marathon.

My friend Michelle had contacted me and wanted to give me a race entry because she’s awesome like that (she is pacing the marathon!). Prior to this, I always said that I wasn’t sure I was ready for a full marathon.

But for some reason, I impulsively said yes (my only hesitation was that I had already signed up for a half marathon that is one week after the Morgan Hill Marathon. gulp.). And just like that, I began my new goal of blackening all toenails and discovering new areas to chafe.

Watching my awesome blogger friends do marathon after marathon inspired me and helped me make that crazy decision. Some (of many- so sorry if I forgot to add you to this list) of the awesome-marathon-runner-blogger-friends who seriously helped inspire me:

Thanks friends 🙂

Congrats Emily!

The winner was emailed this morning.

Are you one of those people who gets cranky during tapering? Usually, yes.

Do you speed up on some of those easy runs so people don’t judge you? *guilty face*

Who inspired you to start running?

  1. That is so exciting – first marathon!!! If I’m doing a slower or recovery run I try to telepathically tell this to every runner I pass. Or I assume they are doing some kind of tempo. It’s kinda lame…….but whatever. I’m pretty weird in that I really enjoyed my taper. More free time and extra sleep – yes please.

  2. I love running on my treadmill because I know that I am getting in the miles but it slows me down a bit so that when I do run outside I run much faster! I would love to run a FULL marathon someday and I thought next fall might be the time but I’m just not sure if I want to commit to that training. With two little ones and my husband away often, I don’t know if I could pull off the training the way I’d really want to!
You are going to rock it!

  3. Love it! I can’t wait to hear all about it 🙂 You are going to kick ass. I don’t get taper grumpies either, I freaking love being “ordered” to do shorter runs…less effort but still going for my goals=awesome. I also totally run on a treadmill at least once a week so I can catch up on awful tv like Top Model…oops 😉 Plus when it’s rainy cuz yuck haha.

  4. Yay! I am so excited for you! You will be amazing! I will be joining you shortly! Woohoo! We will be marathoners!

  5. Yeahhhh girl!!!!!! get it! Basically you’re totally BA and going to rock the socks off of your first marathon!

Also, you should probably just move to NC because I got three pumpkins and 4 gourds from the farmers market for $9. I probably could have gotten one of the gianormous like 70 pound ones for just a touch more than $30 and that would be totally awesome haha!

I feel like the marathon is kind of like getting a dog, going back to school, or starting your own company, if it’s something you want to do at some point in your life, there is never a good time, you just have to do it!

    1. LOL thank youuuuu!

$9!!!!!!! WHAT?! OMG! I honestly have no idea how much pumpkins cost at grocery stores or farmers markets because we used to go to a pumpkin patch for “the experience” lol. If they are just as expensive though, I’m just going to have them shipped to me from NC 😉

OMG you are totally right! My mom constantly tells me that when I start stressing out about grad school or running. You’re the best 🙂

  6. You are so sweet 🙂
I’m super excited for you!!!! whenever you get tired during the marathon, just think “I’m running A MARATHON!!! Pretty soon I’ll be a marathoner!!!!” haha it worked for me

hahah I know what you mean about speeding up around other runners while you’re tapering. once I went out to run 2 mile the day before a race, and I wore sweatpants and a hoodie (it was winter). every time I passed another runner, I wanted to say, “I have real running clothes, I promise!”

  7. You are awesome and inspiring yourself. I know you will do wonderful and just remember that it is about finishing, not about the time. I hope the weather is great so when you have to walk you can just look around at the scenery. And yes I said walk because that is just as much a part of running as the actually running of the marathon. You will do great and I can’t wait to read about it. You will be a marathoner, an elite and in the 1% of the US population! I don’t think I will ever be in the 1% of anything else (ie money!). 🙂

  8. I am not so much a cranky taperer as I am a crazy taperer. I felt like I was going insane.
I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU and thank you so much for the wonderful shout out. I’m so honored. 🙂 It’s funny that you mention the speed up thing because YES. I am so so so guilty of this and the past couple months have been a very humbling experience in slowing down.

I’ve also been having a lot of treadmill time lately. Easier to rehab my foot that way. 🙂

I cannot wait for your marathon. You are going to do so great!!! AHHH it’s SO SOON!!!

  9. Happy taper time girl! I am sooo excited for you. Marathon training to me is almost the most amazing part of the journey. I will give you just a few thoughts that I mentioned to my athletes at our team dinner. Have fun because you already ran the race, the marathon is your victory lap. And stay in the moment and stay in the mile. Focus on the mile you are in and don’t think about the ones to come. And always remember that every mile is different. Just because one mile sucks, doesn’t mean you won’t feel like you can take on the world during the next mile. Have fun and make sure that somewhere near the end of the race you celebrate your hard work and dedication and recognize the fact that you are about to become a MARATHONER!

  10. Hah, I’m definitely guilty of speeding up around other runners so I don’t look slow! I need to get out of my own head and not worry about it. I’m getting so excited to hear all about how your marathon goes!

  11. Whoop Whoop for the taper! Glad you are almost to the big day! I am not a grumpy taper-er but I am a hungry one! I am also never a speedy runner, so I don’t usually run into the whol “needing to slow down” problem but it’s a good one to have! My younger sister is the one who inspired me to start running. I was too competitive to let her do something new without me and had to try…

    1. HAHAHA I bet you as I get closer and closer to the big day I’m going to be a hungry taperer. LOL I’m definitely not a speedy runner- which is probably why I have that insecurity!

LOL so cute! Glad your sister could help you 😉

  12. Hi! I just found your blog and I wish I would have started following sooner! I’m also a runner and a grad student and my boyfriend is way taller than me, too 🙂
I have trouble sleeping and get cranky when I taper… I hope yours is going better than that!

  13. Oh wow, thanks so much Amy. I’m honored that I can help you in some way from far away. You’ll do great. It won’t be easy, but you’ll get it done, and you’ll discover stuff about yourself that you never knew you had. Tackle the marathon and make the half marathon your victory lap!
